From January 18, the general public can discover in the Exaltemps Teleport, a place of experimentation, research and mediation, designed by Dassault Systèmes, within the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, a unique immersive experience on a scale of 1:1 that allows them to teleport into several three-dimensional digital footprints of the cathedral, captured at different times in its history.
This immersive experience, led by a tour guide, immerses small groups of visitors in the heart of the scientific data and the restoration of the cathedral, thanks to the collaboration of the teams of the Notre Dame de Paris scientific project of the CNRS and the Ministry of Culture, the Public Establishment in charge of the conservation and restoration of the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral and Dassault Systèmes.
For several months, Dassault Systèmes teams and the CNRS “digital data” working group conducted workshops in the Exaltemps Teleport with the various actors involved in the scientific and restoration of the cathedral through different themes (materials, architecture, archaeology, structure, etc.). These workshops made it possible to see how simulation tools and collective virtual reality accelerate scientific research and document the restoration project in progress, while facilitating and enriching interdisciplinary exchanges.
These workshops will continue throughout 2024 and the content of the immersive experience will be regularly updated as the digitization campaigns are carried out by the CNRS and the Public Establishment in charge of the conservation and restoration of Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral.
This 1I1 scale immersion, behind the scenes of science in progress, echoes the permanent collection of life-size casts of the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, imprinted with monuments made in plaster in the nineteenth century and is a continuation of the temporary exhibition “Notre Dame de Paris: from builders to restorers”.
