Looking for an interesting digital preservation project? “Lifta’s Last Stand” is a Kickstarter project dedicated to scanning endangered sites in Palestine at both a closeup level (individual buildings) and a more holistic level (the encompassing area). These scans will be captured at very high levels of detail and used for research and exploration. Donating doesn’t get you any products or physical stuff, but you get to help support the mission and make it possible. It’s not mentioned if any of the models will be available on Sketchfab, but the campaign page includes a tour of one location already completed using Matterport. Considering the ancient history in the entire region, it’s always good to see efforts like these. Otherwise, once they’re gone, that’s it.
From the campaign
Our mission is to analyze and digitally preserve Palestine’s architectural heritage, with a particular focus on endangered sites. Over the past years, we have dedicated our efforts to document villages under imminent threat of demolition. Utilizing advanced 3D technology, our endeavor centers on creating an interactive digital archive dedicated to capturing the essence of Palestine’s extensive architectural legacy.
Our main goal is to create a digital archive of the last stand heritage sites in Palestine; our objective is to conserve its multi-layered heritage for future generations and provide a platform for academic research and public exploration. This initiative not only safeguards the cultural identity of Palestine but also contributes to global efforts in heritage preservation.
Utilizing advanced 3D technology, such as remote sensing, terrestrial laser scanning, and virtual reality, our proposal entails the comprehensive 3D documentation of Lifta, generating a digital replica that captures both the site and its spatial intricacies. Through the creation of a digital archive of Lifta, our objective is to conserve its multi-layered heritage for future generations and provide a platform for academic research and public exploration. This initiative not only safeguards Palestine’s cultural identity but also contributes to global efforts in heritage preservation.
