Looking for an integrated way to keep your Quest 3 and controllers ready to go all the time? The Sky Tower Charging Dock by ZyberVR might be right for you.
I’ve survived with just using alkaline or rechargeable batteries in my controllers and fumbling with a cord for the headset since starting out with the Quest 2. It works, but it’s a pain to have them sitting around, inevitably burying the controllers under the clutter of my office. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to keep them together for organization, at plus be able to keep them fully charged? I sure thought so!
ZyberVR has been doing a great job of releasing multiple accessories for the Quest 2 and 3 at fairly reasonable prices. The Sky Tower is a bit more expensive than some but is a fairly large item weighing nearly 3lbs. Is it worth the price?
Assembly
Don’t be too daunted looking at the pieces when you open the box! Assembly is pretty quick and easy. I had it together in a few minutes without looking at the instructions. If you’re unsure, just follow the steps and you’ll be ready to go in no time.
One thing to note is that 3 pounds is heavier than I expected. It’s not only a little heavy, it’s not a compact unit either. This doesn’t matter too much since you’ll find a home for it and leave it there, but still worth noting.
Also worth noting, the unit comes with a “wall wart” style transformer to power it. I just expect everything to be USB power delivery these days, so I was a little surprised.
I found the magnetic charging piece to be packaged a bit odd, so I wasn’t sure at first how to connect it. I needed to remove it from a little clip first. I’m assuming the clip was to keep it from breaking in transit, but it seems it could have been tucked in other ways for the same effect.
Charging
As you likely know, both the Quest 2 and 3 headsets have built-in rechargeable battery packs that can be charged easily with a USB-C cable. Unfortunately, sometimes plugging it in can lead to small scratches around the connector if you aren’t always careful, but it’s still nice.
As for the controllers, I’m annoyed that after so many headsets, we still have to fumble for AA batteries. Opening the battery compartment on the Quest 2 was always a little challenging, for me anyway. On the 3, it’s easier to open, but there’s no tab or level to eject the battery, so either you risk your long nails (if you have them) or find a flat-head screwdriver (or butter knife…). It’s silly since you can buy USB rechargeable AA batteries at retail for a few bucks. How much cheaper would it cost in volume to use that technology so you can plug in your controllers? But I digress….
The ZyberVR charging tower includes rechargeable AA batteries and a replacement battery cover that enable them to be recharged without opening them. Again, I wish this was part of the base unit, but Meta has decided to prop up the AA battery industry for a few more years.
I was happy to see the additional USB-C port on the back. This can be used for charging a secondary battery pack, but it’s just USB power so you can charge your phone or other devices.
Usage
Using the dock is easy. Once both ends of the power cord are connected, you basically just set the headset into the upper cradle and the controllers into the small wells. The headset might need a little shifting to align the head support with the ledge. It adds an extra second but isn’t difficult.
Summary
The ZyberVR Quest 3 Sky Tower Charging Dock is a well-made product. For some reason, the price on Amazon at time of writing is higher, so buy direct if you can. Find a dedicated space on a counter or table to keep the unit. Finally, if you aren’t a fan of the RGB lighting, the switch on the back turns it off while having no effect on charging. It would be nice to be able to dim the lights instead of turning them off, but it’s not a deal breaker. Overall, if you want an all-in-one solution for managing your headset and controllers while keeping them charged, this is a great product.
